Mabel Christine Cox Harrison

Mabel Christine Cox Harrison 90, of Rocky Mount died Saturday November 4, 2017.

She was born in Roanoke Rapids to the late Eddie Paul and Fannie Doyle Cox.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, brother and her beloved granddaughter, Ann-Elizabeth Doyle Brown.

After attending Cosmetology College in Raleigh she moved back to Roanoke Rapids where she owned and operated Chris’s Hair Styling on east 10th street until her retirement at the age of 73.

She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Christine moved to Rocky Mount in October 2012 to live near her daughter and family. She was cared for and loved by the people of Breckenridge Assisted living center until her death there earlier this week.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Cora Brown and her husband, John W. Brown, III of Rocky Mount; her grandson John-Paul W. Brown and his wife, Fahlon of Nashville, NC and her granddaughter Rebekah F. Brown of Charlotte and her nephew Eddie Cox of Titusville, Florida.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday November 7, 2017 at 3 P.M. in the Brown family cemetery at the home with Dr Rob Westlund officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-3 P.M. at the Home.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids.

Stuart “Randy” Randolph Moseley, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on Monday, November 06, 2017.

A native of Brunswick County, VA, he was born the son of the late Lorenza Clay and Louise Wright Moseley.

“Randy” was preceded in death by his wife Betty Hux Moseley and his brother Raymond Moseley.

“Randy” was retired from West Point Stevens.

He is survived by his two sons, Jimmy Moseley of Roanoke Rapids, Mark Moseley and Kelly Matthews of Roanoke Rapids; his four grandchildren, Stephanie Moseley of Roanoke Rapids, and Jeffrey Moseley and Courtney Stegall of Roanoke Rapids, Trey Matthews of Roanoke Rapids, and Madison Matthews of Roanoke Rapids; his four great-grandchildren Braidyn Stegall, Brianna Bland, Bentley Bland and Greyson Moseley and his special nieces; his two brothers, Morris Moseley of Roanoke Rapids and Glenn Moseley and his wife Catherine of Roanoke Rapids and his sister Evelyn Spence and her husband Jesse of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

John Garland Whichard

John Garland Whichard, 73, of Jackson, NC, passed away on November 5, 2017.

He was born in Portsmouth, VA, to the late Leon Randolph Whichard, Sr. and Virginia Dare Braswell Whichard.

John enjoyed sailing, walking on the beach and horses.

John is survived by his son Brad Whichard of Danville, VA; his brother, Randy Whichard and his wife Diane of Jackson, NC; his grandson, Lane Whichard of Danville, VA, and his granddaughter, Jordan Bowman of Virginia Beach, VA; his close friend and caregiver, Marsha Tegl of Gaston, NC; his two nieces Jodie W. Barrett and her husband Thomas of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Melanie W. Whichard and her husband Bryan Ayscue of Woodland, NC; and his nephew, John Randolph Whichard, and Mable of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and his faithful companion Coco.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Askew Funeral Service Jackson Chapel in Jackson, NC with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home.

Roger Johnson Liles

Roger Johnson Liles, 88, of Aurelian Springs, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.  

He was the son of the late Willie Leon Liles, Sr. and Annie Crawley Liles.  

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hayes Butts Liles and his siblings, B.B. Liles, Virginia Milteer, Nan Holland, Herman Liles, Leon Liles, Jr., Louise Liles Faison, and Mildred Tippett.

Roger was a farmer in Halifax County for many years.  

He served his country in the U.S. Army (Korean War).  He loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.  

He is survived by 2 sons, Greg Liles and his wife, Dr. Kay Lawrence of Littleton; Michael Butts and his wife, Wanda of Littleton; a sister, Mary Catherine Lee of Norfolk, VA; a brother, Sam Liles of Aurelian Springs; 4 grandchildren, Christina Sewell and her husband, Brian of Roanoke Rapids, Lori Anne Cain and her husband, Derrick of Eure, NC, Lynley Liles of Littleton, and Michael Butts and his wife, Sarah of Littleton; 6 great grandchildren, Natalie France, Holly France, Ben France, Lance Sewell, Reese Cain, Camden Butts; and a great-great grandchild, Leighton Fahey.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, at Tabor United Methodist Church in Littleton at 2:00 PM officiated by Rev. Stan Lewis.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  

The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 1:00 PM until the time of service.

Joyce Johnson of Wilmington, NC, passed away November 7, 2017.

She was born to Willis Henry Swinson and Lily Kornegay on June 16, 1929, in Duplin County, NC.

Joyce lived in Newnan, Georgia for many years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan. She was a charter Member of the Kiwanis Club of Coweta County.

She was an active member of the LakeHills Bridge Club and the Jeanette Barron Sunday School Class;  a past President of the LakeHills Garden Club and a Member of the Eastern Airline Pilot Wives Club.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her six siblings.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin Bernard Johnson Jr.; son, Marvin B. Johnson III; daughters, Cynthia Joy Johnson and Candace Gay Johnson; and grandchildren, Jacob Hamilton Moore, Swinson Matthews Moore, Caitlin Christine Johnson, and Catherine Lillian Johnson.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM November 11, 2017 at Roberts Chapel Cemetery 2617 Britton Rd, Pendleton, NC 27862.

A memorial service will be held in Newnan, Georgia, at a date to be announced.

Marian Gay Thompson,74, of Winterville, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, NC, was born on November 17, 1942, and passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017.

A native of Northampton County, she was born to the late Charlie Mitchell Gay, Jr. and Janie Rose Gay.

Marian was preceded in death by her husband, George L. “G.L.” Thompson, Jr.; her daughter, Kathleen Thompson; and her sister-in-law, Vivian Browder.

Marian is survived by her daughter, Melinda Thompson Doty and her husband, James of Winterville, NC; her two grandsons, Elijah and Brian, her sister-in-law Bessie Mae Morris and her husband, Bernard of Littleton, NC; her brother and sister-in-law, Lynwood and Dorma Thompson of VA; her brother-in-law Don Browder of Weldon, NC and her many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Sid Collins and Rev. Bob Rose officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Margaret Blythe Johnson

Margaret Blythe Johnson, beloved mother to Jennifer and cherished "Mema" to Sam, passed peacefully to eternity in heaven on November 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.  

Margaret loved people, and her extroverted personality made her a shining beacon of light and God's grace.  

She cared deeply, served hospitably, and her heart of service is a model for those around her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Johnson, and her parents, Verdell Matthews Blythe and Leon Elias Blythe.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Holt; grandson, Sam Holt; brother, Jimmy (Judy) Blythe; nephew, Jimmy (Amy) Blythe, Jr., and niece, Penny Blythe Williams.

Visitation and funeral services were held on November 16, 2017 in Nashville, TN.

The family invites you to join them as they have planned a receiving of family & friends on Sunday afternoon at Seaboard Baptist Church, Seaboard, NC, from 1:30-2:45 prior to the funeral.

A Graveside Celebration of Life will be conducted Sunday, November 19, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC.

Zollie was preceded in death by her son William “Jumie” Henry Washington, Jr.

Zollie is survived by her “Old Goat” Alfred R. Behrendt; her three daughters, Ruby Lorain Kidd, and her husband Don Smith of Windgimer, VA, Pamela Joyce Painter of Warrenton, NC, Laville Laverne Huffman of Fredericksburg, VA; her two brothers Robert Gochenour and Ronald Gochenour both of Alexandria, VA; her six grandchildren, Samantha Matters, Becky Huffman, Jenny Huffman, Eddie Huffman, Jackie Morroe, Sherry Witts; and her three great-grandchildren, Brandon Matthews, Hunter Harbin, and Chase Harbin.

Mary Josephine Suiter Glover, 84, of Littleton, NC, died Monday, November 20, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.

Mrs. Glover was born in Nash County and was the daughter of the late Joseph Etheldred and Kathleen May Suiter.

Mrs. Glover was preceded in death by her husband Julian Earl Glover and her grandson, Brett Aycock.

Mrs. Glover graduated and grew up in Roanoke Rapids, and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School and attended Meredith College. She was the co-owner of Mary Jo’s Sportswear. She retired as the manager of Star Furniture after 31 years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Dee Keel and her husband, Rufus of Chocowinity; Greta Glover and Mike Aycock of Littleton, Fern Pitchford and her husband, Eddie of Littleton; one son Joe Glover and his wife Tammy of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her six grandchildren, Earl Taylor Outland, Ann Cathey, Mary Cathey, Chase Alexander Glover, James C. “Jack”  Keel, Barren Aycock and his wife Jennifer, her three great-grandchildren Hayden Jenkins, Ares Pinero, Julian Chucci and John Aycock (Mother, Kristy Phelps) and special cousins and their families, Mary Ellen Babcock, Dick May, Edwin Mitchell, and Sidney Earl Mitchell.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. on Tuesday November 21, 2017 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Services on Wednesday November 22, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Howard Guidry and Rev. David Fambrough officiating.

Burial will follow in the Bear Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lucy Outland Pulley, 95, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017.

A native of Halifax County, Lucy was born to the late Cornelius Spurgeon and Minnie Gertrude Wheeler Outland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Goff Tippens, Sr., her son, Steven Craig Tippens and her brothers, Lester Outland, Louis Outland and George Outland; her sisters, Margaret Outland Parker and Raye Outland.

Lucy was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church, a member of the Roanoke Rapids Senior Citizens and volunteered at the hospital for many years.

Lucy is survived by her daughter, Margo Tippens Rawlings and her husband, Robin of Shawboro, NC; her sons, Rev. Norman Goff Tippens and his wife, Nancy of Roanoke Rapids, NC James Mark Pulley, Jr.; her seven grandchildren and her fourteen great-grandchildren and one Great-great-grandchild.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Marion is survived by her two daughters, Kim Martin of Seaboard, NC, Teresa M. Medlin and her husband, Wayne, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her son, Bubba Martin and Jamie Tedder of Gaston, NC; her sisters Madeline Cifers and her husband, Bud of Emporia VA, Cynthia Johnson and Dale of Emporia, VA, Pam Wrenn and Tom Weatherway of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Dale Davis and her husband Stanley of Emporia, VA, Crystal Capps of Emporia, VA; her brothers Vaiden Pearson of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Benny Pearson and his wife Barbara of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her sister-in-law Alice Pearson of Emporia, VA; her grandchildren Randy Shane Snider, Haley Walker, Tori Majors, Destinie Molina, Reyna Molina, Michaela Clements; her two great-grandchildren, Harper Majors and Lee Lee; her two Canine Companions, Little Bit and Katie and her several nieces and nephews.

Wendell Clay Moseley

Wendell Clay Moseley, 79, of Littleton, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, November 24, 2017.  

Born on February 27, 1938, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, to Henry Clay and Ella Jo “Josephine” (Allen) Moseley, he was a lifelong resident of Halifax County, NC.

Wendell was a caring man who loved his community and enjoyed serving in a variety of ways.  

He was an active member of Rosemary UMC and Rotary International Club until health prohibited his attendance.

Wendell was an attorney in Roanoke Rapids from 1963 until 2011.

Additionally, he helped the area by serving on a variety of boards such as Roanoke Savings Bank, Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District, Halifax Memorial Hospital attorney, Halifax County Board of Elections attorney, and Roanoke Rapids Graded School District board, and the Roanoke Rapids Board of Adjustment.

In Rotary, he was the district governor in 1983-1984 during which they established the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference which continues to present.

Wendell was a kind family man who enjoyed loving, laughing, and spending time with his family.

He was married to Nancy (Garner) Moseley for 52 years and enjoyed building a happy life with her and their two daughters, Ruth (Moseley) Logsdon and her husband Jim, of Lemoore, CA, and Mary Clay (Moseley) Vick of Cary, NC.

He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn (Moseley) Buxton of Cary, NC, brother-in-law Scott Garner and wife Allison of Matthews, NC, and sister-in-law Ann (Garner) Phillips and husband Wrenn of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Wendell leaves five grandchildren to cherish his memory: Emily Clay Vick and Katherine “Katie” Grace Vick of Cary, NC, Elizabeth Claire Logsdon and Henry Clay Logsdon of Lemoore, CA, and Ethan Cameron Logsdon of Middleburg, FL.

Also, he leaves to cherish his memory several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Wendell enjoyed a full life because of the loved ones with whom he shared his days.

The family wishes to thank all the special caregivers who helped to care for Wendell during his declining health.

We wish to thank Emmett Faulcon, Martha Denton, Joyce Garner, Doretha Harris, Ida Macon, Helen Edmonds, Ruth Poulsen, Elnora Richardson, Carolyn Gilliam, Alyssa Gomes, Sandra Pearcey, Allison Coleman, and Sandy Borrell. Additionally, we appreciate the support and care provided by Community Home Care and Hospice. This help allowed Wendell’s last days to be comfortable and at home.

Wendell suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and was one of the million Americans who suffer from this disease.

Dr. Mark Allen Stacy, formerly of Duke Neurology and now Dean of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, helped to manage Wendell's illness and enabled him to enjoy life to the fullest as long as possible.

Louise Harris Davis, 85, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on Friday November 24, 2017.

A native of Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Wright and Ruth Miller Harris and was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Louise is survived by her four children, Sybil Hawkins and husband, Tony of Roanoke Rapids, Cindy Burgess and her husband Ralph of Ahoskie, Debbie Berry of Roanoke Rapids and Ricky Davis of Roanoke Rapids; her seven grandchildren, Dan Hawkins, Amy Walker and husband Tom, Stacey Trivett and husband, Sam, Jamie Burgess and wife, Sheila, Heather Ham and husband, Chris, Kevin Davis and Erica Hargrave, her twelve great-grandchildren and one sister, Joan Watkins of Indiana.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Rick Rogers officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

A native of Halifax County, she was born to the late John Franklin and Katherine Alice Zollicoffer West. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, John West and Jack West and her sister, Jane Green.

Katherine is survived by her special nephew, Murril “Kenny” Jenkins and his wife Vickie of Roanoke Rapids; her great nephew, Matt Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids; her two great nieces, Katherine and Charles Anna Jenkins.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017, at 1:00 P.M. at Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Louisburg, NC.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Holt; grandson, Sam Holt; brother, Jimmy (Judy) Blythe; nephew, Jimmy (Amy) Blythe, Jr., and niece, Penny Blythe Williams.

Visitation and funeral services were held on November 16, 2017 in Nashville, TN.

The family invites you to join them as they have planned a receiving of family & friends on Sunday afternoon at Seaboard Baptist Church, Seaboard, NC, from 1:30-2:45 prior to the funeral.

A Graveside Celebration of Life will be conducted Sunday, November 19, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC.

Zollie Rebecca Miller, 82, of Macon, NC, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruby Parks Gochenour.

Zollie was preceded in death by her son William “Jumie” Henry Washington, Jr.

Zollie is survived by her “Old Goat” Alfred R. Behrendt; her three daughters, Ruby Lorain Kidd, and her husband Don Smith of Windgimer, VA, Pamela Joyce Painter of Warrenton, NC, Lucille Laverne Huffman of Fredericksburg, VA; her two brothers Robert Gochenour and Ronald Gochenour both of Alexandria, VA; her six grandchildren, Samantha Matters, Becky Huffman, Jenny Huffman, Eddie Huffman, Jackie Morroe, Sherry Witts; and her three great-grandchildren, Brandon Matthews, Hunter Harbin, and Chase Harbin.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at Greenwood Cemetery in Macon, NC, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 from 12:30 until 1:30.

Mary Josephine Suiter Glover, 84, of Littleton, NC, died Monday, November 20, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.

Mrs. Glover was born in Nash County and was the daughter of the late Joseph Etheldred and Kathleen May Suiter.

Mrs. Glover was preceded in death by her husband Julian Earl Glover and her grandson, Brett Aycock.

Mrs. Glover graduated and grew up in Roanoke Rapids, and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School and attended Meredith College. She was the co-owner of Mary Jo’s Sportswear. She retired as the manager of Star Furniture after 31 years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Dee Keel and her husband, Rufus of Chocowinity; Greta Glover and Mike Aycock of Littleton, Fern Pitchford and her husband, Eddie of Littleton; one son Joe Glover and his wife Tammy of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her six grandchildren, Earl Taylor Outland, Ann Cathey, Mary Cathey, Chase Alexander Glover, James C. “Jack”  Keel, Barren Aycock and his wife Jennifer, her three great-grandchildren Hayden Jenkins, Ares Pinero, Julian Chucci and John Aycock (Mother, Kristy Phelps) and special cousins and their families, Mary Ellen Babcock, Dick May, Edwin Mitchell, and Sidney Earl Mitchell.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. on Tuesday November 21, 2017 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Services on Wednesday November 22, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Howard Guidry and Rev. David Fambrough officiating.

Burial will follow in the Bear Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the Halifax Regional Medical Center Emergency Room Staff, ICU third and fifth floor staff, and Dr. Agbata and caregiver Velma Richardson.

Lucy Outland Pulley

Lucy Outland Pulley, 95, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017.

A native of Halifax County, Lucy was born to the late Cornelius Spurgeon and Minnie Gertrude Wheeler Outland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Goff Tippens, Sr., her son, Steven Craig Tippens and her brothers, Lester Outland, Louis Outland and George Outland; her sisters, Margaret Outland Parker and Raye Outland.

Lucy was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church, a member of the Roanoke Rapids Senior Citizens and volunteered at the hospital for many years.

Lucy is survived by her daughter, Margo Tippens Rawlings and her husband, Robin of Shawboro, NC; her sons, Rev. Norman Goff Tippens and his wife, Nancy of Roanoke Rapids, NC James Mark Pulley, Jr.; her seven grandchildren and her fourteen great-grandchildren and one Great-great-grandchild.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.
