Norman Lee Davis Jr.

Norman Lee Davis Jr.

Norman Lee Davis Jr., age 67, was born on June 7, 1950, and passed away at his home on Friday September 1, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Norman was the son of the late Norman and Julia Garner Davis.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Frances Bendall.

Survivors include his devoted wife of more than 40 years, Dru Mealhouse Davis; two sisters, Nancy Davis Wood and her husband, Sammy, and Janet Davis Sykes and her husband, Robert; two nieces, Christy Wood Loyd and her husband, Patrick, and daughter, Lizzy; Sara Curtis Sykes and one nephew, Justin Davis Sykes. Also surviving are numerous cousins, aunts and devoted friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Norman’s life will be held on Sunday September 3rd at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Samuel A. Dickens, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia, beloved son of Samuel A. Sr. and Ella (Helen) D. Dickens passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Sam, a graduate of Fort Hunt High School,  served in the US Army as a Chaplain’s assistant before joining his father at Suburban printing company.

Sam’s life was full of everything he enjoyed — golf, art, food, family and friends. Please remember his life as full and rich.

He is survived by his Mother, Ella (Helen) D. Dickens, his sister, Deborah and her husband, Frederick Dannenberg.

Visitation will be on Tuesday September 12, 2017, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids from 6-7:30 P.M.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Lillian Newsom Johnson, 88, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday September 12, 2017.

Lillian, a native of Halifax County, was the daughter of the late John P. and Fannie Johnston Newsom.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, John P. Newsom, Jr., Lemuel Lee Newsom, Albert Newsom and Sterling Ray Newsom; her niece, Carol Ann Golden and a nephew, Brad Newsom.

She was a member of Quankie Baptist Church.

Lillian is survived by her husband, Robert Brantley Johnson, her sons, Robert Dennis Johnson of Roanoke Rapids and Eric Kim Johnson of Columbus, Miss; her nieces, Gail Sheffer, Ann Cabana and Susan Newsom; nephews, Wayne Newsom, Steve Newsom and Preston Newsom; special friends, Herman and Barbara Massey and Carlton and Hazel Shaw.

Graveside Services will be held Friday at 11 am at Quankie Baptist Church with Dr. Lavelle Waters officiating.

Richard Gregory 'Greg' Moore

Richard Gregory “Greg” Moore, 56, of Roanoke Rapids died Monday July 10, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Greg a native of Roanoke Rapids was a 1980 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School.

He retired as a machinist with Kennametal in Weldon. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved farming.

Greg is survived by his wife Leigh Neathery Moore, his son Brandon Moore and his wife Kelly of Roanoke Rapids; His father and mother, Gene and Carol Moore of Roanoke Rapids; his brothers, Neal Moore and his wife, Barbara of Roanoke Rapids and Mike Moore and his wife, Robin of Margarettsville; two step-children, Calvin Long and his wife Stefanie and Ashley Thacker and her husband, Chris all of Roanoke Rapids; three nieces, Atalee Jones and her husband, Mark, Emily Moore and Kenley Moore; nephew Wyatt Moore; four grandchildren, Luke, Jacob and Hunter Thacker and Emzlie Long.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday July 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Baker Rigg officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday July 12, 2017 from 7-8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Edward Wayne “Poochie” Bridgers of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday July 18, 2017.

He was native of Halifax County and was preceded in death by his daughters Jennifer Elizabeth Bridgers, April Nicole Bridgers; his Mother, Janie Morris and his stepfather, Charlie Morris, his sister, Patricia Morris Stone; his Brother, Perry Bridgers.

Edward was retired from the Halifax Paper Board and was a member of First Christian Church of Roanoke Rapids. He never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face.

Edward is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Betty Nowell Bridgers, his daughter, Emily Bridgers Lawhorn and her husband, Shane of Kenly, NC; his granddaughter, Emma Grace Lawhorn; his grandson, Brayden Lee Lawhorn; his Mother-in-law, Mary Nowell, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his sister, Donna Morris of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Sister-in-laws, Hazel Bridgers of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Nancy Joyner and her husband Dennis of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Jonnie Miles and her husband, Charles of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Rhonda Turner and husband “Punk” of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Gilda Fowler and her husband Timmy of Rocky Mount, NC; his Brother-in-law Robbie Nowell and his wife Tammy  of Roanoke Rapids, NC, his Uncle, Bobby Burton of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his Aunt, Kathleen Stalls of Roanoke Rapids, NC; several Nieces and Nephews and his special Neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. David Abernathy.

Betty Dora Lewis Hamill, 85 of Enfield, NC passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2017.

She was born to the late Joseph Monterey and Ruth Elizabeth Spivey Lewis and was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Hamill.

Betty was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was also a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Leigh Hamill of Enfield, NC, Betty Jo Stallings and her husband Allen of Enfield, NC; her three grandchildren, Donny Wayne Speight, Jr., George Edward Clay, Brantley Lewis Stallings; her two Great-grandchildren Rylie Lynn Avery Clay and Mason Edward Clay.  

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 2:30 P.M. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Susan Joyce officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lewis Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 1:30 P.M. until service time.

Myra Hazelene Jones Medlin, 82, of Littleton, NC, passed away on Sunday July 30, 2017.

A native of Duplin County she was the daughter of the late Isaac Edmond and Jabez Mobley Jones and was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Louise Delantonas; her sisters Nisha J. Mohorn, Velma J. Shanklin; her brothers, Talmadge E. Jones, Osborne Jones, Dallas Jones, Carl Jones and Murdic Jones and her special Niece, Denis Hales.

Hazelene was a 1953 graduate of Aurelian Springs High School.

She worked at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company in Weldon, NC; Samarkan Manor in Eagle Springs, NC; and Garden Lake Estates in Wilmington, NC.

She was a member of Community Center Baptist Church in Halifax where she was active in the W.O.M., Sunday School and the choir, member of the Lake Gaston Ladies Club, an avid Golfer and a dedicated Housewife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Henry Medlin, of Littleton, NC; her children, Robert “Robbie” W. Medlin of Halifax, NC, Henry Dale Medlin of the home; her grandchildren, Tracy Glenney of San Antonio, TX, Stacy Shaw of Weldon, NC, Chrystal Medlin and Brandi Jones of Carolina Beach, NC, Cheryl Medlin and Keith Spettel of Charlotte, NC, Amberlin Medlin of Greenville, SC, her Great-grandchildren, Robert Jacob, Michael and Morgan Glenney, Lucas Medlin and Wyatt Shaw, her sisters, Susie J. Clizbe of Halifax, NC, Elenor J. Hales and her husband Robbie of Halifax, twin sister, Eudene J. Freuler and her husband Bill of Lake Gaston, NC, Opal J. Loflin and her husband Donald of Maryville, TN; her brother Forrest Jones and his wife, Ellen of Halifax, NC, and her many nieces and nephews and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Community Center Baptist Church in Halifax, NC with Dr. Jim Whitehead and Dr. Julian Mills officiating.

Shirley McLawhorn Lucas

Shirley McLawhorn Lucas, 81, of Roanoke Rapids died Wednesday August 9, 2017.

Shirley, a native of Pitt County, was the daughter of the late William Bruce and Louise Hite McLawhorn. She was also preceded in death by a brother William McLawhorn.

Shirley was a 1957 graduate of East Carolina University. She was a retired teacher with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. She was a member or ADK Sorority and First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Bob Lucas, their two sons, Steve Lucas and his wife Tara of Huntersville and Scott Lucas and his wife, Camilla of Belmont; her grandchildren, Evan, Emily, Adam and Lauren Lucas; her brother, Jimmy McLawhorn and his wife, Ann, of Fayetteville.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Corey Oliver officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Wendy F. Byrum, 51, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017, in the afternoon at home among loved ones after a long battle against cancer.

Wendy left behind many family and friends to cherish her memories and mourn her loss, including her two children, Danielle and Bristol, two grandchildren, Cienna and Cyanne, two brothers, Daryl and Brian, her sister Lynn, a life partner Jonathan, her mother, Faye Dunlow and all of her school family and children as well.

Ms. Byrum’s  Mother will be carrying out a Memorial service at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services Chapel on Friday August 25th at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ricky Jordan officiating or family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life memorial where her ashes will be scattered with Wendy’s children and other loved one’s.

Ralph Lester Tarbox,  87, of Roanoke Rapids died Thursday September 21, 2017, with his loving wife by his side.

Ralph, a native of Boston, Mass., was the son of the late Ralph Lester and Stella Howell Tarbox. Ralph served his Country in the United States Air Force retiring as Master Sgt.

Ralph was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Tarbox, his step sons, Steve Mincher and his wife Robin of Roanoke Rapids, Greg Mincher and his wife, Ester of Rocky Mount and Tony Mincher of Rocky Mount; his sister Carolyn Siegel of Malden, Mass; eight step grandchildren and 2 great step grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 3 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Dr. Layne Wallace and Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Carol Ann Hanna

Carol Ann Hanna 75, passed away at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility on Thursday morning, September 21, 2017.

She was born and raised in Roanoke Rapids, except for a few years in Richmond, Virginia, after marriage.

Carol was the most loving and caring Christian women you could ever hope to meet.

She was a prayer warrior with a strong faith in God.

She took her first steps in church as we grew under the Ministry of our grandmother, Rev. Mollie J. Finch.

She worked hard all of her life until many health issues prevented it.  

She loved singing gospel music with her sister Joyce and Mitzi Cahoon.

She also played keyboard for Morris Cannon and the Virginia Laymen for several years.

Carol was very much loved by the staff and residents at Liberty Commons, who all came to her on a regular basis for prayer or just to talk.

She was known there simply as Hanna or Mama Carol.

She was dearly loved by all the transport people in her life who took her to the doctors and dialysis.

Carol was a member of Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church and formerly Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Sr. and Mary Francis Finch, and her daughter, Deborah H. Hale, her grandparents, Hubert and Mollie Finch, and her sister-in-law Ginny Finch.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth E. Hanna of Ashland, Va., her sons, Kenny Hanna and his wife, Rachel of Palm Coast, Florida, and Garry Hanna and his wife Pam of Roanoke Rapids; her faithful son-in-law Ron Hale of Halifax, who stood by and cared for her as his own Mother; grandsons, Justin Hale and his wife Emily of Panama City Beach, Florida and Matthew Hanna of Roanoke Rapids; one great grandson, Adam Hale, son of Justin and Emily; her sister, Joyce Finch Balmer  and her brother, Lloyd Finch, Jr., both of Roanoke Rapids;  nephews, Blayden Finch, Bryan Finch and David Balmer; nieces, Missy Balmer Walthall and Janie Balmer. Her close cousins, Barbara Matthews,  Derenda Clements, Gloria Ellis and Joyce King Wiggins and several others.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday September 26, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Askew Funereal and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Tony Smith and Rev. Ken Arrington officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The Family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at Lloyd Finch’s home 1528 Brickell Street Roanoke Rapids.

Glenyce Merritt Haigler, 70, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late William Dallas and Beulah Blondie Cross Merritt.

Glenyce was a member of First Christian Church. She also had been with Ralph’s Barbecue since 1984.

Glenyce is survived by her three sons, Jay Haigler of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Brandon Haigler of St. Petersburg, Fl, and Houston Haigler of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her niece, Tracy Haigler Carter of Cary, NC; her special cousins, Kim Amerson and her husband, Bill, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Christina Cross of Chicago, IL, Gavin Woodruff and his wife, Melissa, and many other Cousins and Special Friends.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church with Minister Bane Angles officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday September 29, 2017 from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Carl Edward 'E.C.' Peoples Jr.

Carl Edward Peoples, Jr. (E.C.), 73, passed away on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017.

Carl was born in Henderson, NC, and grew up in Roanoke Rapids.

He graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1962 and the apprentice program at the paper mill.  

He retired from the paper mill after 42 years of service. He was also the welding instructor at Halifax Community College for several years.

Carl was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He took his skills as a welder and learned the art of blacksmithing, which he enjoyed regularly even on his last day of life.

Above all, he loved his family and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He was a member of East 10th Street Church of Christ for 53 years and of Halifax United Methodist Church for 17 years.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother and father, Pearl and Carl Peoples, Sr.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 53 years, Norma Jo; his children Carl III (Sahana), Chuck (Lee), and Christina (Bruce); his grandchildren Eli, Cora, Ella, Langston, Maya, and Bodhi; and step-grandchildren Jonathan and Abby.

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Services on Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m.

The Celebration of Life will take place at Halifax United Methodist Church on Friday at 11 a.m. The family will have a private interment service.

Mary Elizabeth Burton Nowell, 87, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Jimmie Allen and Eula Mae Barrow Burton and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Nowell Sr; her grandchildren, April and Jennifer Bridgers; brother, James A. Burton; son-in-law, Edward Bridgers; her brother-in-law, James A. Stalls.

Mary was a member of First Christian Church and loved going to Oscar’s Restaurant to eat. She also loved listening to and calling in to the Lake Country talk show.

Mary is survived by her five daughters, Betty N. Bridgers of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Joyner and her husband, Dennis, of Roanoke Rapids, Jonnie Miles and her husband, Charles, of Roanoke Rapids, Rhonda Turner and her husband, “Punk,” of Roanoke Rapids, and Gilda Fowler and her husband, Timmy, of Rocky Mount; her son, Robbie Nowell and his wife, Tammy, of Roanoke Rapids; her nine grandchildren, Emily Lawhorn and her husband, Shane, Amy Lynch and her husband, Kevin, Robbie Miles and his wife, Heather, Chris Turner, Bobbie Smith and her husband, Mike, Justin Nowell, Dusty Nowell, Mandy Reason and her husband, Josh, and Jake Fowler; her 15 great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren, Rusty Miles and his wife, Shannon, Darrell Miles and his wife, Paula, and Gene Miles and his wife, Sandra; and several stepgreat-grandchildren; her sister, Kathleen Stalls of Roanoke Rapids; and her brother, Bobby Burton of Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements, and other times at the home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at First Christian Church, with Minister Bane Angles officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Betty  Briggs, 77, of Enfield, died Sunday, October 15, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born in Columbia, SC, and was the daughter of the late Darnell B. and  Howard T. Hornsby, Sr.

She loved quilting and spent almost every day at her sewing machine. She made quilts for the Veteran’s hospital and the Ronald McDonald House.

Betty is survived by her husband of 41 years, John Alfred Briggs of the home, her son James Christopher Vaughan and his wife, Cristel, of Roanoke Rapids, her daughters, April Vaughan McKee and her husband Steve of Nashville, NC and Kim Briggs Mann and her husband, Gary of Raleigh, her sisters, Linda B. Whitfield and her husband, Marvin of Fairmont, Ga., Deborah B. Murphy and her husband, Scott of Niceville, FL., Carol B. Smith of Darlington, her brother, Howard T. Hornsby, Jr of Lafayette, Ga., five granddaughters, Allison McKee Askew, Christina Vaughan, Jaci Vaughan, Karly Mann, and Kelly Mann, three great-grandchildren, Riley Askew, Londyn Askew and Ryker Askew.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 2 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev Susan Joyce officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 at the Funeral Home 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Charlotte Smith Wheeler, 76, of Jackson died Saturday October 28, 2017.

Charlotte, a native of Northampton County, was the daughter of the late Frank Norfleet and Nettie Jenkins Smith. She was also preceded in death by her son, William “Bill” Wheeler, her sister, Regina Dickens, and two brothers, Mark and Carroll Smith.

Charlotte was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a long time member of Jackson Baptist Church where she was the treasurer for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Otis Wheeler, her daughters, Angie Wheeler and her fiancée’ Jeffrey Blanton of Jackson and Nettie W. Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; five grandchildren, Chad Wheeler, Hunter Wheeler, Trevor Edwards, Gabriel Wheeler and Colby Edwards; her sister, Dezma Medlin of Florida, her brother Gerald Smith and his wife Betty of Trenton, Ga., and several Nieces and Nephews.

A Memorial service will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017, at 2 P.M. at the Jackson Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating.

Interment will follow in the Jackson Cemetery.

The Family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services Jackson Chapel, 313 W. Jefferson Street, Jackson, NC.

Mallori Louise Reagan, 19, of Enfield, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017.

Mallori was a native of Marion County, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her Grandfather, Walter Herbert Dunn.

She was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School.

Mallori is survived by her parents, Richard and Clara Dunn Reagan of Enfield, NC; her brother, Joseph Reagan of Enfield, NC; her Paternal Grandparents, Bart and Estella Reagan of Ocala, FL; her Maternal Grandmother, Gennevee Dunn of Ocala, FL; and her many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday November 9, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Whitakers Chapel Church on Church 5356 Thirteen Bridges road Enfield with Rev. Daniel West officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
